The Background of John Hawkwood

John Hawkwood, hailed as the “Sword of England” and the “Shadow of Italy”, embodies the turbulence of the late Middle Ages.
Tempered in France under Edward III during the Hundred Years’ War, he earned knighthood and a clear-eyed view of war’s hard truths. When peace came, he moved to Italy, embracing the mercenary life that brought him unparalleled fame.
Commanding the formidable White Company, Hawkwood navigated the rivalries of popes and city-states with iron discipline and cold strategy, fighting for Pisa, Milan, and the papacy, yet never hesitating to turn against former allies. Keen political instincts kept him unbeaten.
Victories won him cities, lands, and honorary Florentine citizenship, commemorated by a fresco in Santa Croce. His name still rings through that cradle of culture like a bell across the centuries.

Based on the above data, we can draw the following conclusions.
  • John I of Portugal is more suitable for the early stage. He has high gains in ranged troops training speed and capacity, which can be of great help in troop training. Also, his gains in this aspect are easier to improve than the other two generals. Besides, his gains in offensive and defensive ranged troops are relatively balanced, but not as prominent as the other two generals.
  • Sulla is a more practical general in mid-term development. He still has high gains in training speed and capacity, and his gains in offensive and defensive ranged troops are higher than John I of Portugal. In addition, his buff on in-city troops is the best.
  • John Hawkwood is more suitable for players who are good at attacking. His gains in troop training are weaker, but his buffs in attacking ranged troops are much higher than the other two generals, especially in attack. Furthermore, he has some debuffs on enemy troops, which neither John I of Portugal nor Sulla has.
